My name is Brian Bell, MPA and I am a Personal Finance Coach partnered with Synergos Counseling. I received my Master's in Public Affairs from the LaFollette School of Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and my B.A. in political science with a minor in public administration from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. I am a lifelong student of performance management, econometrics (a blend of economics and statistics), and financial independence. I have also served in the Army Reserve for over 20 years, and have served in State Government in various policy, budget, and leadership roles.
I started offering personal finance coaching to support others in achieving freedom from the anxieties of managing finances and down a path of prosperity for themselves and those they care for. Additionally, you can put your finances on auto-pilot while building self-confidence and independence. My approach is to teach and empower individuals to gain control of their own finances through the use of evidence based methods. It is my belief that having a sound financial foundation is critical to enabling success in other areas of life (i.e. relationships, health, wellness, etc). Finances are often a leading contributor toward divorce, interpersonal conflict, mental health concerns, and other unhelpful events. I have partnered with Synergos Counseling to extend their resources toward their approach of providing comprehensive interventions to achieve overall wellness. "My wife and I have struggled with getting financially organized for years. We spent most of our time litigating purchases after they already happened, rather than planning ahead. Our conversations about money were charged, creating trust issues between us, and as a result we often avoided the topic entirely, which made the problem worse.
Brian really empowered us to have constructive conversations about money. He talked us through using simple tools — no complex system to learn or buy into — to see at a glance how much money we had coming in, how to focus on tracking essential monthly expenses, and how to prioritize debts so that we had a roadmap for getting completely debt free within a few years. I actually wanted to cry the first time I could actually visualize not having debt — it was like a huge emotional weight had been lifted.
There have been bumps given the pandemic, but using those same tools, we've been able to adapt and stay on track toward our goals. If money is an emotional topic in your relationship, I can't recommend Brian enough. By teaching us to talk about money more effectively with one another, he not only put us on a firmer financial footing — he gave us a firmer footing in our relationship."
