What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was created by Marsha Linehan to provide psychotherapy and skills-training treatment for emotional, interpersonal, and behavioral dysregulation concerns. DBT has been shown to be an effective treatment for adults, adolescents, and families, and can result in reductions in depression, suicidal behaviors, and emotional dysregulation.

The DBT treatment for adolescents presents a module that is unique to adult and children DBT treatments, called Walking the Middle Path, which provides techniques and strategies for parents. DBT skills training for parents is typically short-term, not including psychotherapy components, and scheduled on an as needed basis. Some goals of these sessions would be to provide the parents with techniques and strategies to improve communication with their children, practice and model appropriate emotion regulation, and increase positive experiences with their children.

What would DBT parenting skills training look like?

● Session 1: Completing intake paperwork, reviewing DBT training assumptions and modules, and setting treatment goals
● Session 2: Review Walking the Middle Path module- Dialectics
● Session 3: Review Walking the Middle Path module- Validation & Communication
● Session 4: Review Walking the Middle Path module- Behavior Change
● Session 5+ (optional): Review supplemental modules that support treatment goals such as mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation
● Session 6: Process treatment goal progress, provide feedback, and say goodbye

Along with learning and practicing the skills in your 60 minute session, your clinician will provide and suggest resources such as handouts, readings, workbooks, and videos to demonstrate these skills and deepen your understanding on how to apply them. You will be creating goals at the end of each session to practice these skills, and your clinician will check in on the completion of these goals at the start of each session.
